are y'all far enough from the equator that it's pretty much cold-ish all the time? like how the u.k. is pretty chilly (by my tucson native standards) even in the summer?

its definitely cold by tucson standards. lets just say, i'd take a tucson december over a dunedin december, hands down.

one bonus is that in summer our daylight hours are ridiculously long. the sun will rise around 530am and set about 10pm. but in the winter the converse is true - the sun rises around 9am and sets about 430pm - so winters here are monumentally depressing. i think dunedin folks probably spend about 3/4 of the year suffering from seasonal affective depression!

the north island has a much warmer climate...and its driving me crazy right now because i want to be in gisborne where my hot boyfriend is revelling in the hot weather and swimming in the warm pacific ocean. instead i am stuck here in the rainiest dunedin december i can remember. and if i'm lucky i might strike a hot day and i can jump in an ocean so cold it will give me an ice cream headache.

oh yeah and once when i was ten it snowed on christmas day! it was like, uh, bein in the northern hemisphere or something.
